Mentoring
A commitment to mentoring new faculty is essential to the mission of San Diego State University and to our ability to attract and retain excellent faculty. The university strongly supports the mentoring of new faculty, including:
- Support through the Retention, Tenure, and Promotion process, with clear documentation of department/school, college, and university policies, processes, and timelines (including RTP Handbook for Candidates and RTP Handbook for Reviewers);
- Opportunities for networking with colleagues and administrators;
- Access to a designated faculty mentor within the new faculty member's discipline and regular meetings to discuss essential topics; and
- Information about campus resources that advance professional development in teaching and research, provide support for underrepresented faculty, and address the work-life needs of diverse faculty members and their families.
It is recommended that colleges and departments/schools develop mentoring practices that incorporate these elements as well as professional development considerations specific to their respective disciplines.
